What is your nonprofit called and how long have you been established?
Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship (WCEC), est. 2009
What is your mission?
Our mission is to empower women to invest in themselves via entrepreneurship by providing the resources necessary to own, operate, and grow their businesses. We provide workshops, webinars, business counseling, access to lending, networking and educational events.
Who does your organization serve?
Women who want to start or grow their own business in the northern 14 counties of New Jersey.
What was a recent project you worked on? How did it come to fruition?
Recently, we held our annual Business Plan Expo. With 100 people in attendance, we had 6 entrepreneurs launch their businesses publicly for the first time. These 6 entrepreneurs spent at least 17 hours in training and 2-5 hours in business counseling over 9 months. We worked closely with them and are happy to have this be our second annual Expo. In addition to those 6 start-up businesses, we had 12 more towards the back of the room who have completed our advanced business growth programs. All clients with tables were able to showcase their businesses, network and sell their products and services.
What was the inspiration behind the formation of your nonprofit?
Empowering women to invest in themselves and their communities via entrepreneurship.
What’s on the horizon (with respect to your endeavor; future plans or goals)?
We will be hosting a lot of our workshops and webinars in October. They will be open for registration by September.
What speaker topics/experts are you looking for? Who can our readers contact if they want to volunteer their expertise?
If you are looking to volunteer your expertise as an instructor for a workshop, you can reach out to Nichole & Steve at [email protected]. Please provide your resume or link to your LinkedIn profile, a video of you teaching (if available), recommendations, and suggested class topic with a brief class description. All classes must be relevant to owning a business, in workshop format, and at least 1 hour long.
Do you have specific milestones/dates you can share with us (ie. gratitude clubs)?
This year, we are celebrating our 10th anniversary. We host a monthly Women Entrepreneurs Support Group here in our office.
If our readers have children who want to get involved in your organization if is that possible and how?
We have Marketing/Communications internship positions available for college students that are receiving credit for an internship or work study.
What are additional ways in which our readers can contribute or volunteer their time?
We typically only host about 2-3 educational events per year and could always use assistance with registration, greeting guests, set up and take down. We also have an opportunity to help with administrative work like scanning. Anyone looking to contribute a donation to the organization is welcome to call our office and speak directly with our Executive Director.
